How to Extend the Results of Teeth Whitening

A bright, white smile truly is a beautiful thing: Being proud of your teeth instills confidence, happiness, and poise. That’s why At SmileBoutique, located in the heart of Mount Vernon, New York, highly-regarded dentist Wayne Hofflich shares five easy tips for extending the results of your teeth whitening treatment.

1. Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day

Keeping good oral hygiene habits is the best way to extend the results of your teeth whitening. For good oral health, brush in the morning and at night and floss at night. Those efforts constitute the bare minimum for optimal dental hygiene — brushing after each meal is even better.

2. Use an antiseptic mouthwash

Even with proper brushing and flossing technique and frequency, some germs and food debris can remain on your pearly whites. Knock out whatever’s left with an antiseptic mouthwash before bed. If you’re prone to staining and buildup, consider swishing with mouthwash when you wake up, too.

3. Minimize coffee and red wine

When it comes to staining teeth, coffee and red wine stand as two of the most common and most significant culprits — both contain dark-colored compounds that transfer easily to your teeth. Other teeth-staining foods and drinks include tea, turmeric, soy sauce, tomato products, beets, berries, and dark chocolate.

If some of your favorite foods are on that list, minimize consumption — like drinking one cup of coffee instead of two — and brush your teeth immediately afterward whenever possible.

4. Eliminate tobacco and nicotine use

Nicotine and tobacco products can do serious damage to your teeth. Nicotine and tobacco products contain staining compounds, like some foods and drinks, but they also contain chemicals that may contribute to enamel erosion and other tooth damage or discoloration.

Cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, chewing tobacco, and even vaping devices can give your teeth a yellowish or brown hue. Consider kicking the habit for the health of your teeth — and your body. If you really can’t, try an alternative method of consumption, such as skin patches.

5. Schedule maintenance appointments

To significantly extend the results of your teeth whitening, schedule follow-up whitening appointments for maintenance. Every six months is a good place to start, but you may want to come in more often if you’re prone to repeated staining from foods or tobacco.

Getting dental cleanings twice a year can also extend your results.

Why get professional teeth whitening?

Do-it-yourself teeth whitening products leave room for error. Teeth whitening at your dentist’s office is the only way to ensure professional-grade results — meaning an even, bright white that lasts.
